To cut to the chase, Ceremony play 80s hardcore harder, heavier and faster than anyone did 25 years ago, and they do it pretty well.
I’m a big fan of bad brains, black flag et all but for me they lack some of the cheek-rippling pace that attracts me to modern hardcore; and that is where Ceremony step in. It’s not rhythmically or tonal complex, they crash through most of their 15 songs in about a minute each with little variation, but that’s not why you listen to a band like this. They have old school hardcore with a snifter of metal and a healthy dose of punk and they have this aura of thrash that makes me want to compare them to F-Minus. And they’re not a million miles away from F-Minus’ darkest points, but with a macabre atmosphere that trumps F-Minus at every point and sounds more like a sped up Rudimentary Peni.
The production is excellent, and seems to accent everything Ceremony is going for; and the lyrics are decent but didn’t jump out at me, I’m not sure whether I love or hate the line ‘I wont be skull-fucked by faith’.
I’m going to invent the genre speed-hardcore-metal and put them in it, feel free to add futher bands.
