London social centre rampART was evicted in the Early hours of Thursday morning by 45 police and bailiffs.
Police attempted to chainsaw through the door, whilst others climbed onto the roof. They also blocked all roads leading to rampART.
The space was occupied for over 5 years and used for a host of non commercial events including fundraisers, meetings, a convergence space, art space and much much more. The building had previously been abandoned.
The space had been run by a collective set up with no hierarchical structure and an emphasis on consensus and DIY culture.
Attempts to evict the building had been made in the past (including during the G20 protests in April 2009 when armed police raided the building) but have always failed.
This news comes when almost 25% of high street stores lie empty and unused in some areas of the UK.
