Crafts meets subversive (and not so subversive) literature at Southampton’s first zine and craft fair.

Saturday 21st – Sunday 22nd November

12-5pm both days
Entry is free

‘Stalls and workshops will be upstairs to browse and shop, whether for you or for Christmas presents for your nearest and dearest. ‘

Stall info

Vicky Stevenson creates zines, illustrations, photography and sewn pieces inspired by objects and mechanical items that she finds interesting and attractive.

Southampton Solent Illustrators love nothing better than drawing and doodling to their hearts content. their stall will consist of fresh zines, postcards and prints, and all profits will go towards their degree show.

Steve Larder will have a stall on at least one of the days and has work featured in Last Hours newest publication Excessive Force

Hannah Southcoast writes for Suspect Device, Last Hours, The Angels Share and has her own zines: “South Coast Vegan Cooking” zine, “Lost Property” travel zine and “A Zine for the Ladies”. In addition, she often makes really tasty vegan cakes and sells them along with her distro at shows. What a trooper!

Brighton Zine Collective formed in the autumn of 2008 with the intention of organizing an event in Brighton. Some of our members write their own zines (Mujinga, the New Wave of Cut & Paste, Fanzine Ynfytyn), some make crafts, some do a zine distro (Hoojemaflap), some just really like reading zines. Our distro is predominantly zines and contains a range of punk zines, political pamphlets and perzines, maybe a couple of arty things. We stock zines created by members of the Brighton Zine Fest collective as well as other UK based zines and a few European ones.

Last Hours. That’s us! We will have our two new publications on sale as well as all our other radical literature. Come and say hi!

plus loads more!

G20 finance ministers will be gathering in St Andrews, Scotland on the 6th and 7th of November to discuss the economic recession.

The G20 are a group of twenty finance ministers and central bank governors from 19 of the worlds most wealthy economies and the European Union. These economies cover 80% of world trade and the countries themselves contain two thirds of the worlds population.

Various groups and individuals have called for mass protest in response to the gathering.

“We are opposing the G20 because they are an unrepresentative, undemocratic organization that serves the few at the expense of the many. The G20 may have come to a quiet corner of Fife, but that does not mean they will escape public opposition,” said Katherine Kemp, a fourth year international relations student at St. Andrews.

The assembly point is “Church Square,” located near the intersections of Church St. and South St., next to Holy Trinity Church, St Andrews (Map)

G20 meetings this year have been hit by large scale protest. First in London, UK where thousands of people flooded the streets, smashing banks and battling police. The day tragically ended with the death of a passer by after being shoved to the ground by police. Then in September anarchists and anti-authoritarians took to the streets in Pittsburgh, USA where corporate shop windows where smashed.(read a report back from CrimethInc here)

For those not aware of the Anarchist and Zine libraries both act as archives for radical text covering a huge range of topics. Whilst the Zine library offers a mish-mash of scanned zines in various forms and qualities including titles such as ‘The Coming Insurrection’ and ‘Fire to the Prisons’, the Anarchist library focuses on producing ‘typographically accurate, easy to parse, clean textual treatments of anarchist texts.’

The archives, that now contain literally thousands of documents are a great way of disseminating ideas and information for free to anyone with internet access.

The best news is that both have just made available BitTorrents of their complete catalogues. This means that the complete archived texts can be downloaded and shared around the world easily and for free.

To find out about the BitTorrents visit http://www.theanarchistlibrary.org/announcing-library-torrent or http://zinelibrary.info/announcing-anarchist-library-torrent

London social centre rampART was evicted in the Early hours of Thursday morning by 45 police and bailiffs.

Police attempted to chainsaw through the door, whilst others climbed onto the roof. They also blocked all roads leading to rampART.

The space was occupied for over 5 years and used for a host of non commercial events including fundraisers, meetings, a convergence space, art space and much much more. The building had previously been abandoned.

The space had been run by a collective set up with no hierarchical structure and an emphasis on consensus and DIY culture.

Attempts to evict the building had been made in the past (including during the G20 protests in April 2009 when armed police raided the building) but have always failed.

This news comes when almost 25% of high street stores lie empty and unused in some areas of the UK.

If you are able to help move or store stuff please contact the rampART collective – rampart@mutualaid.org

Anti-IMF and World Bank protests taking place in Istanbul, Turkey this week have heightened as police armed with shields, fired tear gas canisters and rushed to disperse protesters in Taksim Square. The protesters where only a few hundred meters from the IMF-World Bank meetings. “Long live freedom. IMF, get out of our city,” protesters chanted.

Meanwhile anti-capitalists trashed banks and fought back against the police using petrol bombs and sling shots. It is though that one man may have died due to cardiac arrest after being exposed to large amounts of crowd control gasses.

At least 100 arrests have been made.

The meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank are well known for attracting counter protest in part due to their role in enforcing global free market capitalism.

A gathering against the prison society

31st Oct/1st Nov 2009 – Cowley Club, 12 London Road, Brighton, UK

2 Days of discussions & presentations about the struggle for liberation, inside and outside of the prison walls. Organised by random anarchists and the Anarchist Black Cross.

As the economic crisis hits deeper and people get organised and angry, the state needs media diversions like the War on Terror, escalating political repression, paramilitary policing, new prisons & immigration detention centres, biometrics, surveillance, relentless imperialist incursions – All to maintain the class divisions that ensure continued economic exploitation. The UK State, leading others, is about to proceed on a major prison building project, whilst more and more our societies already resemble open prisons. It all has to go.

This is a call for debate and exchange, to reflect and agitate…
